Taking the Opportunity to Gain a Career, Not Just a Job!

Tuesday, 11 July 2006

CRT Group, a national logistics company, has a strong focus on people and a commitment to quality. It was therefore a logical decision for CRT to embrace the fast-track apprenticeship scheme that benefits not only the logistics industry, but young Australians in the community.

The much talked about national skills shortage is driving many initiatives on both a Federal and State level by injecting funds into new apprenticeship programs. However, in June 2003 a new apprentice initiative was launched ahead of its time, which encouraged young Victorians to “Get a career, not just a job”.  The masterminds behind this exciting initiative are CMV Truck & Bus Pty Ltd, Melbourne based Mack and Volvo truck dealer, with the support of global transport leaders, Volvo Trucks.

One 18 year-old from the western suburbs of Melbourne who is realising the extensive benefits of the fast track apprenticeship scheme is Ryan Hermann, who commenced his apprenticeship on 1 May this year with CRT Group. At 18 years of age, Ryan has already completed 2 years in an automotive pre-apprenticeship program and an initial 6 months in a full time automotive apprenticeship, prior to securing his place in the fast track apprenticeship program.

When asked what set the fast track apprenticeship program against others, Ryan said “what appealed to me about it was that the apprenticeship specialised in Volvo products. I know that Volvo are always using advanced technology and constantly improving on it, which is an incentive, as this will benefit my career”.

Ryan said he is enjoying the culture that permeates the working atmosphere at CRT.

“What makes CRT different from other employers that I have worked for in the logistics industry is that the people who work there are a close knit community”, said Ryan.

The Automotive Apprenticeship is a fast track program that enables graduates to qualify for a Certificate III in Automotive (Mechanical - Heavy Vehicle Road Transport) in 3 years instead of 4. The initial intensive training period begins for the apprentice at CMV Technical Training Centre, located in Laverton, Victoria, where apprentices receive theoretical and practical training on current model trucks and buses by a qualified and experienced Volvo Technician.

The apprentice then returns to their host employer whilst alternating between CMV Truck & Bus Pty Ltd and Kangan Batman TAFE in 1-2 week blocks for the duration of the apprenticeship. It is at Kangan Batman TAFE where the compulsory learning modules and electives are provided.

Mr David Preston, Chief Executive Officer of the CRT Group believes that the apprenticeship program is a crucial part of supporting the future of the both the industry and young Australians.

“In becoming a host employer of the fast track apprenticeship program we are investing in Australian youth who are the future of our industry. We are proud to be a part of the program, which CMV Truck & Bus Pty Ltd, backed by Volvo, had the foresight and commitment to introduce a few years ago”, said Mr Preston.

Mr Neil Heinemann, National Competency Development Manager for Volvo Commercial Vehicles Australia says that Volvo has supported TAFE colleges by providing product and technical information for development purposes for many years.

“Volvo see the development of our people as an extremely integral part of our business as these individuals will shape the future of the industry” says Mr Heinemann.

Whilst there are many apprenticeships available, a placement in the growing and fast paced logistics industry presents a rewarding career choice for young Australians.

Mr David Preston, Chief Executive Officer of the CRT Group notes the giant leaps that the logistics industry has made over the last decade and dispels some of the views and perceptions that some may have of the industry.

“The prospect of a career in the logistics industry is far removed from the stereotype that people working in the industry, walk around wearing a ripped singlet and shorts – this perception belongs in the dark ages.

It is certainly in stark contrast to the tremendous opportunity that is available for young men and women who are part of the apprenticeship program and the bright future that awaits them as they embark on an exciting career” said Mr Preston.

As a progressive company that plans for the future, CRT Group realises the importance of progression planning as part of the strategy to address the current skills shortage in the industry and will employ an additional 3 apprentices over the coming months in maintenance and engineering roles. These apprenticeships will not be part of the fast track program, but will be conducted over the usual four year apprenticeship term.

“The logistics industry is fast paced and innovative, as the sophistication of technology dictates the changing nature of how CRT Group operates and the processes that we are required to implement to streamline our operations and provide efficiencies to our customers” said Mr Preston.

CRT Group is a national logistics company, specialising in providing innovative supply chain solutions, tailored to meet the needs of industry. The company became part of Australian logistics giant, QR National in 2005.
